1 Chronicles 4:9-10 NKJV 9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.

Most of us have read what has commonly been referred to as “The Prayer of Jabez” found in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. Often when we recite this prayer we focus on what Jabez asked God for. Rarely do we focus on why he asked God for these things. Jabez’ whole life was associated with his painful birth and not the actual life of honor he lived. He was so impacted by the NAME he was given that his cry to God was simply: “Lord, cause my life to not reflect my name.

Many have lived with a name, title, or label that people have given you based on your past, based on a mistake you’ve made, or based on something that happened to you… “ex-convict”, “divorcee”, “widow”, “barren” etc… And even though you’ve accomplished a lot in life and have tried to move beyond what you’ve been labeled or called, it still haunts you.

People may have spoken false destinies and even word curses over you because of decisions or mistakes you’ve made, or things that have happened to you. For some, it may have been out of pure jealousy and not anything that you did. But God is able to change that and to cause none of it to manifest! The Bible says God honored Jabez’ request to not live out the meaning of his name.
